Road Racing News: Peter Hickman’s Dominant Performance at the 2023 TT
Published on June 6, 2023, by Cycling Weekly
Peter Hickman showcased his exceptional talent and determination at the 2023 Isle of Man TT, emerging victorious in an impressive four races. The British rider secured a double win in the Superstock class, followed by a triumph in the second Supertwin contest and a commanding victory in the coveted Senior TT on Friday.
Hickman’s dominance was further underscored when he set an outright lap record of 136.358mph during one of his Superstock wins. However, his success did not come without some behind-the-scenes drama, as his team faced protests from a rival, believed to be within the Michael Dunlop camp.
“Both Superstock results got protested before we’d even left the winners’ enclosure with stupid shit. I guess that just means I’m in their head more than what they are in mine.”
The protests, which were ultimately dismissed, alleged the use of an illegal earpiece and an unauthorized ECU. Undeterred by the scrutiny, Hickman responded with a scathing rebuke.
In the culminating Senior TT, Hickman showcased his mastery of the BMW Superbike, a machine he had been struggling to tame throughout the event. However, a successful warm-up session on Friday allowed him to find the right setup, and he capitalized on this by taking an early lead and setting a blistering 135mph lap from a standing start.
Hickman’s strategic approach paid dividends, as he managed to “break everyone” on the opening lap, establishing a comfortable lead that he maintained throughout the race. The second-place finisher, Dean Harrison, and third-placed Michael Dunlop provided a thrilling battle behind Hickman, further highlighting the British rider’s dominance.
Reflecting on his hard-earned victory, Hickman expressed his satisfaction, stating, “Super happy for the team, massive congratulations to all the team and the sponsors.” The TT’s road racing news once again shines a spotlight on Hickman’s remarkable talent and his ability to overcome adversity, cementing his status as a force to be reckoned with in the world of road racing.
