NG Road Racing Championship 2024 Season Opener – Thrilling Recap

Cycling News: Challenging Weather Conditions Test Riders at NG Road Racing Championship Opener

Oulton Park Track Poses Stern Test for Riders

On Thursday, April 11, 2024, the first rounds of the NG Road Racing championship kicked off at Oulton Park, greeted by challenging weather conditions. The track was set to test the riders with freezing cold winds, sharp showers, and even some hail, making for a true test of skill and resilience.

Timed Qualifying Determines Grid Positions

Despite the unpredictable weather, the one-day format saw a combination of last year’s championship positions and extensive research by the NG Team to prepare the grids. The 600 National and Clubman riders did have a timed qualifying session, with Ricky Elder taking pole position on his RE Performance R6 Yamaha, followed by club runner Matt Walker and Gareth Roberts.

Thrilling Races in 600 National and Clubman Classes

The opening race saw Elder take full advantage of his pole position, leading early on before being challenged by BSB rider Lewis Jones. However, Elder rode a measured race, eventually regaining the lead on the final lap to take the victory. The second race was equally exciting, with Elder, Jones, and Walker battling at the front. The race was ultimately red-flagged, with the result going to Elder, followed by Lewis Jones and Will Jones.

Phoenix Open Class Provides Excitement

The Phoenix Open class, supported by the Trowbridge Yamaha Dealership, provided another thrilling spectacle. Defending champion George Edwards, riding a new Honda Fireblade, faced stiff competition from the likes of Ricky Elder, Dave Mackay, and Chris Pope. In the first race, Edwards ultimately prevailed, while the second race saw him dominate, winning by over 22 seconds.

RE Performance Powerbike with NL Motor Services Sound of Thunder Class Dominance

The RE Performance Powerbike with NL Motor Services Sound of Thunder class was led by Edwards, who showcased his mastery of the Oulton Park circuit, winning both races convincingly.

Rodgers Poultry Naked Streetbike and BMW F900 Class Delivers Close Racing

The new Rodgers Poultry Naked Streetbike and BMW F900 class also delivered exciting racing, with Bobby Varey and John Dudman engaging in a close battle for the win.

“Despite some challenges, including a competitor hitting a bridge on the track and causing a red flag, the opening rounds of the NG Road Racing championship provided thrilling road racing action for Cycling enthusiasts.”

The series now heads to Cadwell Park, where the teams and riders will look to build on their performances and continue the pursuit of championship glory.
