TT 2024 Qualifying Session: Michael Dunlop Dominates Superbike Class
The TT 2024 qualifying session got underway on Monday, with Michael Dunlop dominating the Superbike class aboard his Hawk Racing-run Honda Superbike. The Ulsterman clocked a lap speed of 129.59mph, putting him in prime position to challenge the all-time record of 26 wins set by his late uncle Joey Dunlop.
Leading the Timesheets
Dunlop led the timesheets outright, with Davey Todd, who has switched to TAS Racing and BMW machinery for 2024, close behind. Outright lap record holder Peter Hickman completed the top three overall on his Superstock BMW run by FHO Racing.
Delayed Start
The first timed qualifying session of TT 2024 was delayed due to overnight rain, with roads not closing until 2pm for the untimed practices. The session eventually got underway at 6pm local time, with the Supersport and Supertwin classes taking to the 37.75-mile circuit first.
Supersport Class
In the Supersport class, Todd led the way on his V2 Ducati Panigale, posting a fastest lap of 125.601mph. James Hillier, who has reunited with Bournemouth Kawasaki, was hot on his heels with a 125.483mph lap. Michael Dunlop, who switches to MD Racing-run Triumph 675 machinery for 2024, completed the top three in class.
Supertwin Class
In the Supertwin class, Hickman set the pace with a 118.011mph lap aboard his Swan-liveried Yamaha R7. Todd took second place on his Dafabet Racing Kawasaki, while Dunlop didn’t set a time on his Paton due to apparent issues during the untimed session.
Superbike Class
The Superbike class concluded the solo running on Monday, with Dunlop, Todd, and Hickman rounding out the top three. John McGuinness was fourth on the works Honda, ahead of teammate Dean Harrison. After experiencing logistical and supply issues at the North West 200, Honda had a full complement of machinery at the TT. Hickman led the Superstock class at 129.032mph, followed by Dunlop and Dominic Herbertson.
