Michael Dunlop Makes History at TT 2024
On Wednesday, Michael Dunlop etched his name into the annals of TT 2024 history, cementing his status as the most successful rider ever at the iconic racing event. The 35-year-old road racing phenomenon matched the all-time record of 26 wins, previously held by his late uncle Joey Dunlop since 2000, in the opening Supersport race last Saturday.
Dominant Performance
Dunlop’s dominant performance was briefly interrupted by a visor issue in last Sunday’s Superbike TT, which knocked him out of a commanding lead. However, he rebounded with a vengeance in Wednesday’s rescheduled Supertwin contest, leading on corrected time from the start on his MD Racing-run Paton. The TT 2024 favourite controlled the three-lap race from start to finish, claiming his second win of the week and surpassing his uncle’s record.
- Michael Dunlop: 1st (Paton) – 20.4s margin
- Peter Hickman: 2nd (Swan Yamaha R7)
- Dominic Herbertson: 3rd (Burrows Engineering Paton)
- Jamie Coward: 4th (KTS Kawasaki)
- Mike Browne: 5th (Scott Racing Motorcycles Aprilia)
- Davey Todd: 6th (Dafabet Racing Kawasaki)
As described, Dunlop sprinted into a 3.2s lead over Dominic Herbertson on the run to the Glen Helen sector split, extending it to 10.2s over the rest of the first lap before making his mandatory fuel stop. Hickman moved up to second by the end of the first lap, having started it fifth at the Glen Helen split.
“I’m on cloud nine, it’s an incredible feeling,” said an emotional Dunlop after the race.
Dunlop also came agonizingly close to setting a new class record on his last lap, falling just short with a 122.434mph effort.
