Michael Dunlop Makes History at TT 2024
Michael Dunlop kicked off TT 2024 in style, securing his 26th victory on the Isle of Man in the opening Supersport race, drawing level with his late uncle Joey at the top of the all-time winners’ list. This triumph came on the heels of his 27th TT win in the first Supertwin contest earlier in the week.
Supersport 2 Race
As the favorite heading into Saturday’s delayed Supersport 2 race, Dunlop led the pack from start to finish, with the race shortened to two laps due to weather disruptions. Riding his MD Racing Yamaha, Dunlop built a comfortable lead, briefly threatened at the end of the opening lap, before streaking away to claim his third win at TT 2024. Honda’s Dean Harrison took second place, while Davey Todd completed the podium aboard his Ducati V2.
Weather Disruptions
The second Supersport race of TT 2024, initially scheduled for 10:30am local time, was pushed back to 1pm due to rain.
Lap 1
Dunlop stormed to the top of the leaderboards, building a 0.5-second lead over Todd through the first sector split at Glen Helen on the first lap. James Hillier slotted into third on his Bournemouth Kawasaki, ahead of Harrison.
Lap 2
Dunlop’s lead expanded to 0.8 seconds through Ballaugh, with Harrison leapfrogging Hillier on the times in this sector. As the lap progressed, Todd continued to lose ground to Dunlop, eventually trailing by 2.7 seconds at the Bungalow. Harrison jumped into second, ending the tour just 0.9 seconds behind the leader.
The Finish
However, Harrison’s challenge was short-lived, as Dunlop pulled 1.7 seconds clear through Glen Helen and eventually crossed the finish line with a **3. 389-second advantage. He also posted a 129.071mph lap on the second tour.
