2024 Superbike TT: Hickman Triumphs Amidst Drama

In a thrilling display of skill and strategy, Peter Hickman claimed victory in the 2024 Superbike TT, denying Michael Dunlop the chance to surpass his late uncle Joey Dunlop’s all-time win record of 26. The six-lap contest saw a dramatic turn of events, with Dunlop’s Hawk Racing Honda initially leading the pack.

Dunlop, who had equalled his uncle’s record in Saturday’s Supersport race, was dominating the Superbike contest, building a substantial lead of over 20 seconds at his second pitstop. However, a sudden issue with his helmet forced him to stop moments after leaving the pits, resulting in a 40-second loss. This mishap should have handed the lead to TAS Racing’s Davey Todd on his BMW, but he suffered a slow pitstop, releasing Honda’s Dean Harrison into first.

As the race unfolded, Hickman, who had faced helmet visor fogging issues earlier, worked his way up the leaderboard. Despite initially struggling, he managed to capitalize on the misfortunes of his rivals, eventually taking the lead and securing his 14th TT win. This victory saw him equal Mike Hailwood’s tally, a testament to his exceptional road racing skill and determination.
