Michael Dunlop Makes History at Isle of Man TT
June 2024, Road Racing News – Michael Dunlop has etched his name into the history books, becoming the most successful Isle of Man TT racer of all time, surpassing his late uncle’s 24-year-old record in the Supertwin TT Race.
Dunlop’s exceptional speed in qualifying and equalling the record in the first Supersport Race of TT 2024 hinted at his potential to make history. Although a visor issue forced him to stop on Bray Hill during the Superbike Race, denying him the opportunity to equal the record earlier, the Ballymoney rider remained focused.
Record-Breaking Win
Following his record-breaking win, an emotional Dunlop was all smiles as he celebrated with Peter Hickman and Dominic Herbertson, who finished second and third in the Supertwin Race, respectively.
“It’s tough, you know, we should have been 28 [wins] today … I felt good, the boys said ‘these boys are coming’ so I thought I better go! It’s a nice place to be. I’ll never be modelled against Joey. My record, someone will get it one day … But I’ve always wanted this,”
Dunlop said, overwhelmed with emotion.
Praise from Fellow Riders
Peter Hickman, the second-place finisher, praised Dunlop’s achievement, saying, “The little Swan Yamaha is going really well, we don’t quite have enough straight-line speed but handling-wise it’s so, so good.” Hickman congratulated Dunlop, adding, “It’s great to be in the race where Michael gets his 27th win. What an unbelievable achievement.“
The TT Race victory marks a significant milestone in Dunlop’s career, solidifying his position as the most successful Isle of Man TT racer in history.
