On May 29, 1994, the Southern 100 Road Races reached a significant milestone in its history when the Club Committee, members, guests, and riders gathered to officially open the new Club Headquarters. Located opposite the Race Paddock, the building was inaugurated by five-time Solo Champion Joey Dunlop MBE.
Following a warm welcome by then-President Derek Nicholson, Joey unveiled a special plaque, marking the official opening of the Club Headquarters.
The event was attended by Joey’s family, club members, competitors, friends, and other interested parties.
A Remarkable Display of Unity
In a remarkable display of unity, a “Hands Around Billown” was successfully attempted, as people held hands around the entire 4.25-mile course. Thirty years on, the “hut,” as it is affectionately known, remains the heart of the friendly races, hosting meetings, planning, and organization for the two annual road races.
Club Headquarters Facilities
The building houses:
- Offices
- Renowned catering facilities
- Showers
- Toilet facilities for those using the Race Paddock
These facilities have been updated and expanded over the years. Marshal and Medical personnel now operate from adjacent units, along with the team responsible for Merchandise and Hospitality for race sponsors and guests.
