Saint-Gervais Mont-Blanc, France: A Thrilling Day of Cycling Action
In a thrilling day of cycling action, Jonas Vingegaard maintained his slender 10-second lead in the overall Tour de France standings as Dutch veteran Wout Poels soloed to victory after a challenging trek through the Alps with a mountaintop finish.
Poels, who had broken away early in Sunday’s 15th stage, seized the opportunity on a short but incredibly steep ascent located just before the final 7-kilometer (4-mile) climb to the finish line, pulling away from the pack. Wout van Aert finished second, more than two minutes behind, with Mathieu Burgaudeau rounding out the stage podium.
“Locked in a captivating battle for the coveted yellow jersey since the start of the race, Vingegaard and two-time Tour champion Tadej Pogacar once again stayed together throughout the day in the main contenders’ group.”
Pogacar made a late attempt to sprint away from his rival 900 meters from the line, but Vingegaard, the defending champion, quickly responded, refusing to lose any time. Their enthralling duel is set to resume in Tuesday’s time trial, as the peloton enjoys a well-deserved rest day on Monday.
