Cycling News: Dan Kneen Charitable Fund Partners with Rock2Recovery to Launch TORQ, a Mental Health and Wellbeing Service for the Isle of Man TT Paddock
In a significant move to support the mental health and wellbeing of the Isle of Man TT community, the Dan Kneen Charitable Fund has partnered with the mental health charity, Rock2Recovery, to create TORQ – a ground-breaking welfare service accessible to anyone affected by a serious racing incident on the TT Mountain Course.
Recognizing the unique challenges faced by road racers, marshals, and volunteers, TORQ aims to fill a critical void in rider health and welfare. The service will provide a range of support, including refocusing assistance for competitors recovering from serious injuries, coaching for the friends and family of those who have suffered life-changing accidents, and help for those coping with the sudden loss of a loved one.
“Motorcycle racing is our lives, and we all give our time to support the TT, so it is only right we recognize those who are suffering and need help,” said Gary Thompson.
Fully endorsed by the TT’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Gareth Davies, and Clerk of the Course, Gary Thompson MBE BEM, TORQ will leverage the specialized expertise and experience of the Rock2Recovery team, which includes former senior-ranking Royal Marines who have faced their own traumas.
TT winner Lee Johnston, who has personally benefited from Rock2Recovery’s services, echoed the sentiment, stating, “Knowing how hard life is after a big accident, I feel it’s really important in our sport to have a rider welfare and mental health support service like TORQ.”
For the Dan Kneen Charitable Fund, the creation of TORQ represents a fitting legacy for the late Dan Kneen, allowing his closest friends and family to honor his spirit of camaraderie and support those in need within the close-knit TT community.
“We truly feel this initiative is a fitting legacy for Dan and will ensure his spirit of camaraderie lives on at the TT for many years to come,” said Leanne Harper of the Dan Kneen Charitable Trust.
TORQ will be based at the new rider welfare facility during the TT, with support available year-round for anyone affected by a racing incident. The discreet service can be accessed via mobile, WhatsApp, or through the TT Welfare Team.
