Cycling News: Celebrating the Legacy of a Motorsports Icon
In a touching tribute, the Woking-based McLaren team has partnered with sponsor OKX to unveil a special Senna-themed livery for the upcoming Monaco Grand Prix. The car’s papaya orange hue has been replaced with the iconic yellow, green, and blue colors of the late Brazilian racing legend’s helmet, paying homage to his incredible career and enduring legacy.
Honoring Senna’s Legacy
The MCL38 car will also feature Senna’s iconic quotes adorning the cockpit, as well as his name prominently displayed on the front and rear wings. This special livery is a fitting celebration, as the Imola race last weekend marked the 30th anniversary of Senna’s tragic passing.
Senna’s unparalleled success at the Monaco circuit, including five consecutive wins for McLaren between 1989 and 1993, has cemented his status as one of the greatest drivers in Formula 1 history. This distinctive color scheme is a testament to his enduring impact on the sport and the team he represented with such distinction.
“The team is proud to recognize and celebrate the extraordinary life and racing legacy of Ayrton Senna through this McLaren livery,” said McLaren CEO Zak Brown. “Senna remains revered and respected as Formula 1’s greatest icon, and McLaren’s most decorated driver. His impact on McLaren is enormous, and it’s an honor to race for him at his most successful circuit in his green, yellow and blue colors.”
A Collaboration with the Senna Family
The Senna-inspired livery has been in the works for over a year, with the full involvement and blessing of the Senna family. “It’s a fantastic way to celebrate his life and legacy through his iconic colors on both cars,” said Bianca Senna, who works for Senna Global. “McLaren meant a lot to him, and together they achieved a lot of success, much of which he is still remembered for today by so many. It will be special to see it race the streets of Monaco, a circuit which gave him so much joy and many triumphs.”
In addition to the F1 car, McLaren has also revealed a special one-off version of the McLaren Senna road car, aptly named the Senna Sempre, featuring similar colors and a dot-matrix portrait of the legendary driver.
As the road racing news and Cycling enthusiasts eagerly await the Monaco Grand Prix, this tribute to Ayrton Senna’s legacy will undoubtedly capture the hearts and imaginations of fans around the world.
