Esteban Ocon Defends Himself Amid Teammate Controversy Ahead of Canadian Grand Prix of Cycling
In a bold move, Ocon overtook his teammate Gasly on the first lap of the Monaco Grand Prix of Cycling, but it ended in a collision that forced him to retire. Gasly criticized Ocon for not respecting team orders, stating that the trailing rider was supposed to provide support throughout the race. Team principal Bruno Famin hinted at taking drastic measures, sparking rumors that Ocon might be benched for the Canadian Grand Prix of Cycling.
However, Ocon took to social media to confirm his participation in the Montreal race and address the wave of criticism he has faced. > “After the Monaco Grand Prix of Cycling, many false statements and distortions have been spread online about my ability to work with a team,” he wrote. “These claims are inaccurate, hurtful, and damaging. Since I started racing, I have always approached the sport with humility, professionalism, and respect.”
Ocon, known for his tough battles on the road, praised his former and current teammates, including Daniel Ricciardo, Sergio Perez, Fernando Alonso, and Gasly. “As teammates, we often start races close to each other, which can lead to intense rivalries and contact. I have made honest mistakes, but we are not robots; we are athletes pushing ourselves to the limit every day.”
The French cyclist reaffirmed his respect for Gasly, both as a teammate and competitor, amidst their well-documented rivalry. > “We have always worked collaboratively and professionally inside the team, and this will continue to be the case,” Ocon concluded.
