The Greatest Race On Earth: A New Docuseries Revving Up Road Racing
A new docuseries, The Greatest Race On Earth, is set to revolutionize the world of road racing, bringing the TT, one of the most iconic motorcycle racing events, to the forefront. The production consortium, consisting of Free Association, Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment, Jason Keller, Entertainment 360, Box to Box Films, and Mediawan, has already begun filming at this year’s TT, which kicked off with the first day of practice on Monday.
Expertise from Box to Box Films
Box to Box Films, renowned for their work on Netflix’s Drive to Survive, which has significantly boosted interest in Formula 1, will lend their expertise to this project. In addition to the docuseries, the group will also develop a screenplay for a major feature film, slated for marketing later this year.
Elevating the TT’s Profile
The TT’s organizers have been working tirelessly to elevate the event’s profile, with a notable milestone achieved in 2022 through the first fully live broadcast of the race via its TT+ platform, resulting in a substantial increase of 57,000 paying subscriptions to 65,000 in 2023. Last year, the TT produced a bespoke docuseries, No Room For Error, which aired on ITV4 and has been renewed for a second series, set to air this week.
A Significant Surge in Interest
The event experienced a significant surge in interest in 2011 following the release of the Closer to the Edge documentary film, which had a cinematic release and introduced the TT to a new audience. The film boasted Hollywood star power, with actor and 30 Seconds To Mars frontman Jared Leto providing the narration. Channing Tatum, a motorcycle enthusiast, made a surprise visit to the TT last year, while Pitt filmed at F1 rounds last year for an upcoming feature production for Apple TV. Pitt also produced and voiced the MotoGP documentary film Hitting the Apex, released in 2015.
A Legendary Event
“We dare anyone to find more awe-inspiring people, or a more breathtakingly vibrant world than The Isle of Man TT,” said Free Association principles Channing Tatum, Reid Carolin, and Peter Kiernan. “We’ve always been drawn to characters who push the edge of what’s possible, and this race is their Shangri-La. We’re deeply honored to be part of the creative dream team telling the story of this legendary event, and can’t wait to finally share this mythical sport we love with audiences all across the globe.”
James Gay-Rees, co-founder of Box to Box, added: > “It’s a great privilege to be working with these partners on this extremely unique project. The Isle of Man TT is one of the most visceral, exhilarating, and unusual races in the motorsport diary. We can’t wait to bring this incredible world to new audiences.”
