In sad news for the road racing community, Don Fairbairn, the first Vice President of Southern 100 Racing, passed away on Saturday, May 18th, 2024, at the age of 94.
A Life of Dedication to Road Racing
With a dedicated involvement of 41 years, Don played a vital role in shaping the Southern 100, the Pre-TT Classic, and the Post TT Races, serving as organizer and Vice President. He initially joined the Committee in 1984, taking on the role of Catering Officer until 1995. His responsibilities expanded to:
- Deputy Clerk of Works in 1996 and 1997
- Clerk of Works from 1998 to 2008
Don’s commitment to the sport continued as he mentored his replacement, ensuring the smooth transition of course setup and safety protocols.
A Familiar Face in the Paddock
Beyond his administrative roles, Don was a familiar presence in the paddock, overseeing competitor classifications during practices and races, ensuring grid labels were in order. His dedication spanned decades, culminating in a long-service certificate presented by club president Phil Taubman MBE.
A Lasting Legacy in Road Racing
Don’s unwavering enthusiasm and tireless efforts contributed significantly to the growth and popularity of the Southern 100 Road Races, earning it the reputation as one of the year’s most popular and iconic events. His legacy will be deeply felt, and he will be sorely missed by the road racing community.
