Maeving Unveils the RM1S: A Faster, More Versatile Electric Motorcycle
London, UK – March 2023
Maeving, the British-owned motorcycle maker located in the historic city of Coventry, has recently unveiled its latest model, the Maeving RM1S. Building upon the success of the original RM1, this updated electric motorcycle boasts a higher top speed without compromising range or recharging times.
The RM1, Maeving’s first bike, was a hugely popular inner-city electric model that regularly topped sales charts as the best-selling battery-powered motorcycle. However, its 45mph top speed limited its usability outside of urban environments. The RM1S addresses this by increasing the top speed to 70mph, making it more suitable for suburban and dual carriageway riding.
To achieve this, Maeving has made changes to the batteries and motor, as well as the bike’s layout. The dual batteries are now positioned together beneath the top-tube of the frame, allowing for a 10-litre storage compartment in the ‘fuel tank’ area. Despite the higher top speed and increased power (just under 15bhp/11kW), the claimed range remains at 80 miles, and recharging times are unchanged at around four hours from 20 to 100 percent.
The styling of the RM1S remains true to the original model, with a patriotically British aesthetic that can be easily mistaken for a modern classic roadster. Maeving offers a range of seven base colors, as well as two premium options – the Vincent (£7,995) and the Gilbert (£8,195) – the latter featuring a striking white, red, and blue striped design.
“The Maeving RM1S offers a compelling electric motorcycle option for those seeking a well-designed, British-made machine with increased versatility compared to the original RM1.”
Priced at £7,495 for the base models, the Maeving RM1S is available for purchase directly from the manufacturer’s website, with a £500 deposit required to reserve one of the first edition bikes. These first edition models come equipped with carbon front and rear mudguards, as well as a carbon trim on the battery box.
During the test ride in London, the Maeving RM1S demonstrated its strengths in urban environments, with its low weight, low center of gravity, and responsive throttle making it easy to maneuver. The braking system, featuring a combined braking system (CBS) that distributes 60% of the braking power to the rear wheel, proved to be extremely powerful, though the lack of ABS may be a consideration in wet weather.
At higher speeds on the quieter roads around Regent’s Park, the RM1S displayed good stability and balance, though the ride quality was noted as being quite harsh over potholes and cobbles, especially with the optional K-Tech adjustable rear shocks.
While the price tag may be a deterrent for some, the Maeving RM1S offers a compelling electric motorcycle option for those seeking a well-designed, British-made machine with increased versatility compared to the original RM1. Its quality finish, premium feel, and enthusiastic customer base make it a strong contender in the growing electric motorcycle market.
